Dettagli eventoAbstract:
This year, on the occasion of the annual celebration of Worldwide International Commedia dell'Arte Day, the central event will be held in Asia, and more precisely it will see its epicentre in the Asia Pacific / South East Asia area. Due to the actual pandemic, it will not be possible to meet "in person" this year and therefore we have chosen to virtually travel to this distant and fascinating area. Even today, even though we no longer travel as Marco Polo did 800 years ago along the silk road on horses and camels, this part of the world remains much more distant and unknown to us Europeans than the ten-hour plane flight might suggest.
This is the part of the world where I have, for the last 30 years of my life, travelled, worked, explored, establishing contacts and making friends. I want this part of the world to be able to contribute its unique universe of theatrical masks and practices to our celebration, and to share the Commedia dell'Arte experiences from scholars, actors and directors from the various countries that we will virtually visit.
The 2021 event, promoted as always by the SAT Association, this year collaborates with the Luoghi dell’Arte theatre company of Rome (Italy); the International Academy of Performing Arts of the City of Versailles (France) and the International Academy of Commedia dell'Arte from the city of Chioggia (Venice, Italy), this year’s event is dedicated to the memory of two Master mask-makers who passed away last year, Giancarlo Santelli and Franco Leita. This year, in the company of our beloved Commedia dell'Arte, we will travel to the rich, fantastic, mythical, spiritual, and magical world of Asian masks. We will share links, with videos and images taken from numerous countries from within this region, rich in history and tradition.
Our journey of exploration will start from India end in Australia. In between these two geographic extremes we will encounter stories, masks and experiences that relate to Commedia dell'Arte, brought to us by companies and artists from the countries in between, such as Myanmar (formerly Burma), Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and of course Bali, the island of the Gods.
There will, of course, will be contributions from Italy, where Commedia started, as well as specific contributions in memory of the two missing Masters.
Buckle up, let's go!

    BALI (INDONESIA)

CONVERSAZIONE SUL TEATRO-DANZA BALINESE TOPENG ED ESPERIENZE DI COMMEDIA DELL'ARTE A BALI

    Carmencita Palermo
Ha pubblicato i suoi studi sullo spettacolo e la politica culturale balinese, sull'incorporazione della maschera e sul teatro interculturale come capitoli in volumi editi e in riviste accademiche di valore internazionale come Asian Theatre Journal, Intersections: Gender and Sexuality in Asia and the Pacific, Indonesia and the Malay World.

    ASIA PACIFIC REGION

A Book about "Commedia dell’Arte in the Asia Pacific Region"
Co-Editors Dr Corinna Di Niro (Australia) and Dr Olly Crick (UK) talk about the book they are currently working on: Commedia in the Asia-Pacific

CONVERSAZIONE SULLA PRESENZA DELLA COMMEDIA DELL’ARTE NELL'AREA ASIA-PACIFIC

    Olly Crick
Olly Crick currently works as a freelance educator and teacher, mainly in the field of Commedia dell'Arte. Commedia dell'Arte usually confines itself to western romance languages and euro-centric gesture codes. What happens when Commedia and its practitioners set up shop in the Asia-pacific region? Working in partnership with Australian Dr Corinna di Niro, Olly Crick is currently editing a book that details precisely this: how commedia has fared, this century, in Australia, New Zealand, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, India, Bali and Thailand. Adapting to local circumstances and yet keeping its distinctive features, it appears in various forms: as a hybrid, as barter, as cross-cultural performance, as well as a way of introducing the 'east' to the fundamentals of western theatre history and practice.

    Corinna Di Niro
Corinna Di Niro is a teacher, theatre maker and performer. In 2016, Corinna completed her PhD in Commedia dell'Arte for a 21st century Australian context and has published on Commedia, and women/mothers/casuals in Academia. Since 2005, Corinna has run her own theatre company, Stage Secrets, in Adelaide, Australia and in 2019 she became a TEDx speaker for her innovation in virtual reality in theatre.
