SAT is a non-profit Cultural Association concerned with passing on the oral traditions, specifically
for Commedia dell’Arte. In 1992 SAT opened a school, providing day seminars to professionals.
Since 2008 SAT counts among its members national and international solo performers, performing collectives (companies, associations and coops), who operate in the traditional Commedia dell’Arte. Therefore SAT has come to be considered the liaison of the Commedia dell’Arte community to many institutions and organizations.
As such, in 2008, SAT made an official request to the Italian government to have Commedia dell’Arte nominated for candidacy to the UNESCO designation “Intangible World Heritage”. SAT also participated in the UNESCO sessions in Sofia and Paris, as the only Italian NGO.
SAT has since been temporarily designated by UNESCO as NGO actively engaged in the development of international conventions regarding intangible heritage, that is also actively promoting the traditions of Commedia dell’Arte; permanent designation is expected in July 2010
And so SAT has proclaimed “Commedia dell’Arte Day”, to be celebrated each year on February 25. This year celebrations will be based in Bologna, where the vent is organized by Fraternal Compagnia, while Faction of Fools Theatre Company of Washington DC has coordinated events in the rest of the world. Due to these activities, SAT has been given sponsorship by the Italian Commission on UNESCO and by the Italian Center for the International Institute.
